It is freaking COLD out there! it's -26C which
is -16F and windchill is -58C which is, um, well it's off
my chart but somewhere around -70F. Not in Laura's league
(Laura at Mcmurdo Station), or impressive by south Pole standards
but still pretty damn cold. This is at high noon and bright
sunshine mind you. The wind is whipping snow around all the
ice ridges and making a really spooky landscape. Flat sea
ice plus pressure ridges crashing together and sticking up
like broken spines plus the occasional tabular berg on the
horizon have a fairly unique look. Other than the fact that
the sun is a visible disc in the sky and not just a bright
point you would think we were on Europa. Science is going
on regardless of temperature, and everyone is so bundled up
they can only shuffle around like Ozzie. We have to drill
or break a new hole in the sea ice every time we want to drop
a probe or CTD because the old one is already frozen over.
